Metal Coat is an item in Pokémon Go that serves two purposes. It is used to evolve Scyther into Scizor and Onix into Steelix. This is currently the only way to evolve these Pokémon, so many trainers with either of them in their line-up are wondering how to obtain them.

How to Get Metal Coat in Pokémon Go

Evolution items are a somewhat rare item in Pokémon Go. There are a couple methods to getting them, all of which are similar to the methods of obtaining any other evolution item. Still, there are two research quests that are guaranteed to reward you with Metal Coats.

Method #1: Special Research

The two Special Research questlines that provide Metal Coats will always only provide you one of each. The specific research lines you need to complete are Step Four of A Ripple in Time and Step Six of Let's GO, Meltan. A Ripple in Time is the second research line Professor Willow gives you, and can only be accessed by completing all steps in the research titled A Mythical Discovery.

Once you complete Step Four of A Ripple in Time, you'll find that among the rewards is a Metal Coat. Luckily, you only need one Metal Coat to evolve a Pokémon, so this one should be enough!

Method #2: PokéStops Photo Discs

Another way to get a Metal Coat is to spin Photo Discs at PokéStops and Gyms. It is extremely rare for a Metal Coat to drop from spinning the disc itself (less than one percent). However, if you spin at least one PokéStop every day for seven days in a row, you're awarded bonus items, one of which is guaranteed to be an Evolution Item. You have a one-in-seven chance of the evolution item being a Metal Coat.

Method #3: Gifts

The last way to get a Metal Coat is through gifts. Every friend you have on Pokémon Go can send you one gift a day. The more friends you have on the game, the more gifts you can receive, and the more likely that one of them will contain a Metal Coat. This is the least likely way to find a Metal Coat, but it is possible!

As of now, these are the only methods available to get a Metal Coat, as well as most other evolution items. Be sure to use it on your strongest Onix or Scyther!
